Community Cafe reopening and changes to food bank opening hours

The Real Junk Food Project Brighton’s Community Cafe will be reopening for takeaways

From Wednesday 19th May 2021 The Real Junk Food Project Brighton’s Community Cafe will be reopening for takeaways every Wednesday lunchtime from 12.30 – 14.00 at St John the Baptist parish hall. You will be able to collect a delicious takeaway lunch made from food that would otherwise go to landfill on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis.

Pay as you feel

Pay as you feel means that you pay what you can afford or what you think the meal is worth and it encourages people to think about what that plate of food means to them. It helps to end the segregation of people based on financial circumstances in a way that does not patronise those who need it and those who want to support it. Those in need are not degraded or shamed for taking a free or cheap meal, likewise, those who can afford it are not pestered into more and more donations. Everyone is equal in getting fed, it is up to the individual to pay what they feel.

Enjoy your takeaway on The Green

You are encouraged to eat your takeaway in the church courtyard or on the green opposite the Fitzherbert Centre, which has recently been beautifully landscaped by Brighton Table Tennis Club as the first stage of the Fitzherbert Community Hub Community Garden programme.  This will not only give you the opportunity to get to know members of your community but a chance to try your hand at table tennis after lunch if you fancy giving it a go!

Updated foodbank opening hours

As lockdown continues to ease and a full programme of activity resumes at the Fitzherbert Centre we have had to revisit the opening hours of the Food Hub. From week commencing 17th May 2021, the foodbank will be open on Sundays only from 12.30 – 14.30 in St John the Baptist parish hall.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the people who continue to make generous donations to the Sunday Foodbank, including the SVP Our Lady of Lourdes, Rottingdean and the Albert Gubay Foundation! This is a non-referral food bank and can be accessed by anyone who is currently struggling as a result of the impact of the pandemic crisis or facing financial hardship.
